Locating The Auspicious And Inauspicious Sectors Of Your Home

According to Eight Mansions Feng Shui, every house can be divided into eight sectors - four auspicious and four inauspicious. Where these eight sectors are located in a house is determined by the Kua number of the head of the household.

Once you have your Kua number, you can find out which are your four auspicious sectors and which are your four inauspicious sectors.

The next step is to get hold of the house's floorplan that's drawn to scale. With a compass, determine the directions and draw a pie chart like the one illustrated below:

You'll then be able to identify the four auspicious sectors and your four inauspicious sectors for the family.

The Four Sectors Of Your House

Based on classical landscape feng shui, you're able to identify four important sectors of your house - front, back, left and right.

Each of these sectors is represented by one of four celestial animals - the Red Bird, the Black Turtle, the Green Dragon and the White Tiger.

There's a legend behind these four celestial animals and you can read about it in Donald MacKenzie's book China & Japan : Myths & Legends.

"Nu Kwa, a mythical empress of China, was reputed to have become a goddess after she had passed to the celestial regions. When the demons of water and fire, aided by rebel generals of her empire, set out to destroy the world, Nu Kwa waged war against them. Her campaign was successful, but not until a gigantic warrior had partly destroyed the heavens by upsetting one of its pillars and a flood had covered a great portion of the earth. The empress stemmed the rising waters by means of charred reeds, and afterwards rebuilt the broken pillar. Thereafter she created the guardians of the four quarters, placing the Black Turtle in the north, and giving it control over winter; the Green Dragon in the east, who was given control over spring; the White Tiger in the west, who was given control over autumn; and the Red Bird in the south, who was given control over summer."

These sectors are determined using the front door of your house as the reference point. Hence, the front of your house (where the front door is located) is represented by the Red Bird; the back is represented by the Black Turtle.

As you stand facing the front door, the Green Dragon is to your left and the White Tiger is to your right.

The Red Bird and Black Turtle sectors, that is, the front and back of your house, have the biggest impact on your wealth. In general, it's considered very favorable if you've a clean, clear river stream in front of your house and a mountain/hill at the back of your house.

The sector of the Green Dragon (the wall to your left when you're standing inside the house facing the front door) is a Yang position ideal for accumulating Chi. This will ensure that you'll be aided by mentors and influential people in your life.

The sector of the White Tiger (the wall to your right when you're standing inside the house facing the front door) is a Yin position. Activating the Chi in this sector may do more harm than good as you may end up having people around you who'll hinder your progress.

The Cycle of Birth and Destruction of the Five Elements

One of the fundamental principles of Feng Shui is the cyle of birth and destruction of the five elements.

First, the five elements we're referring to here are Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth, which all things in the Universe can be classified into.

Cycle of Birth

cycle_birth.jpg

The cycle of birth is simply: Fire produces Earth, Earth produces Metal, Metal produces Water, Water produces Wood, and Wood produces Fire and the cycle of birth continues...

To understand the logic of the cycle of birth behind the cycle of birth is rather easy. When Wood is burned by Fire, it produces ashes (Earth). Over years, Earth produces Gold. Under extreme heat, Gold liquifies (Water). Water is essential for the growth of trees (Wood). Hence the cycle of birth.

Cycle of Destruction

cycle_destruction.jpg

The cycle of destruction is simply: Fire destroys Metal, Metal destroys Wood, Wood destroys Earth, Earth destroys Water, Water destroys Fire and the cycle of destruction continues...

Fire melts Metal, and Metal (axe) is hard enough to cut through Wood, Wood absorbs all nutrients from Earth, Earth absorbs Water, Water puts out Fire. Hence the cycle of destruction.
