Calculating Your Kua Number
The Kua Number is a basic building block of the Eight Mansion School of Feng Shui. Once you know your Kua number, you'll be able to find out which are the directions that's auspicious for you and which are those that are not.
You'll also be able to identify the auspicious and inauspicious sectors of your home which will be very useful when you're buying an apartment or when you're furnishing your home.
There are 9 different Kua numbers and your Kua Number can be calculated from your birth date.
Depending on your gender, the method of calculating your Gua Number is different.
If You're Male,
Step 1: Add up the last two digits of your birth year
For example, if you're born in 1975, you'll add '7' and '5' to get '12'
Step 2: If you get a double-digit in Step 1, add up the two digits to get a single digit.
Using the same example, add '1' and '2' (of 12 from Step 1) to get '3'.
Step 3: Subtract the number from Step 2 from 10.
You minus '3' from '10' and you get '7'.
So your Kua Number is 7.
If you're Female,
Step 1: Add up the last two digits of your birth year
For example, if you're born in 1982, you'll add '8' and '2' to get '10'
Step 2: If you get a double-digit in Step 1, add up the two digits to get a single digit.
Using the same example, add '1' and '0' to get '1'.
Step 3: Add '5' to the number you got from Step 2.
You add '1' and '5' to get 6'.
So your Kua Number is 6.
Step 4: If you get a double-digit in Step 3, add up the two digits to get a single digit.
Note: If you're born in the 21st century, you should use "10" as the digit for the tenth column. That is, if your birth year is 2001, you should add '10' and '1' in Step 1.
If you're born on 2010, you'll add '11' and '0'. If you're born on 2021, you'll add '12' and '1'.

What constitutes a Good Chinese Name?
After reading my article on change name, my fren asked this question.
There are a few components to a Chinese name according to Geomancy:
- Four Pillars of Destiny, Chinese name master will require this information to understand the destiny and element of the person so that a good name can be given accordingly.
- The number of strokes (it will decide the good or bad name) e.g. 9 strokes is bad, 16 strokes is good; (I will cover more in my free course).
- The good and bad of strokes are through a combination of Chinese Characters which can be classified as below:
1. 天格 (pronounced tian ge) translated as heaven character.
2. 地格(pronounced di ge) translated as earth character.
3. 人格(pronounced ren ge) translated as human character.
4. 外格(pronounced wai ge) translated as external character.
5. 总格(pronounced zhong ge) translated as overall character.
(More details in my course material)
- The five elements to a name (it is said that a good name must encompass all the five elements in geomancy i.e. metal, wood, water, fire and earth);
It is believed that a good master can tell your character and destiny from your Four Pillars of Destiny and your name.

Affirmations: Mind or Myth?
Write your wish 49 times on a piece of paper for 49 days and sign off at the end of each statement with an uplifting signature.
Supposedly, this is a simple yet powerful ritual that will make your wish come true. You can’t skip a day, otherwise you’ll have to repeat this ritual all over again. That probably explains why I never got to find out whether it works or not.
This ritual isn’t one that’s unique to feng shui though. Self-help literatures refer to this exercise as affirmation. The rituals may differ slightly but essentially, it’s all about repeating a positive statement over and over again to help you achieve a specific goal.
Some believe it’s your mind at work. Some believe it’s higher intelligence at work. Some don’t really care how it works, as long as it works.
Try one today: I am at the peak of my health.

Nay-nay Fortune Teller
Visited a fortune teller for the first time yesterday. I must say it was quite a disturbing experience. I had to fax my birth information a week before the actual consultation to the Master, a Chinese women in her forties with a strong Shanghainese accent, so that she can spend time deciphering my destiny and make my $98 seem well spent.
I didn't really like the first sentence that came out of the Master's mouth. She said that my dad gave up 10 years of his life span so that I can be born. Judging from my four pillars of destiny, I'm not fated to lead a good life because I'm someone who doesn't have the fire element in my eight characters, and a normal person is supposed to have all five elements. So I guess I'm a freak.
What followed was a gloomy picture of how my life has been, and will be, simply because I'm "fire-less". I may die before I reach 40; I can't own a business because it'll fail. And when I related to her that I think my life's just fine, she'll tell me I must have done many good deeds (I like to believe I did, and am still doing good deeds) thus accumulating good karma. When she guessed wrongly that I've never started my own business, she'll respond by saying that it's still early to tell. The gods have been merciful so far but it doesn't mean they will be in future. Heck, she sure can get herself out of such situations...and in the process, succeeds in making me feel like my future is fraught with uncertainties and perils.
Of course, I try to reassure myself that I'm the master of my own destiny. And I've always believed in taking responsibility to create my own future. Believing in the theory that life's predetermined just seems such a loser's mentality. It's a way of rationalizing why one's life sucks and in doing so, conveniently giving up the responsibility to take charge of our life. Being born with a lousy destiny just means I have to work doubly hard to get what I want. Screw all naysayers!
